Winter Propane Gas Delivery Safety

No matter the weather conditions, our propane delivery truck drivers work around the clock to ensure your propane home is warm all winter. After a snowstorm, we ask that all of our residential propane customers plow or shovel their driveways and sidewalks. This not only keeps you and your family safe, it also allows our trucks access to your driveway so they can safely make a propane delivery.

If your tank is underground, please shovel a path to the tank as well. The easier it is for us to reach your tank, the faster we can help fuel your home. It also adds an extra ounce of safety so our drivers don’t risk slipping or tripping on snow or ice while servicing your tank. The Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) recommends these other propane safety precautions before a winter storm hits:

• Make sure your propane tank (whether it’s above or below ground) is marked with a flag, pole or stake that’s higher than the average snow cover depth for your area. This makes it easier to find during snow removal or propane delivery.

• Have an adequate supply of propane in your tank. Contact us before or after a storm for delivery.

• Know how and where to shut off the outdoor propane supply, indoor propane appliances, electricity and water.

• Never store or place a propane cylinder indoors or in an enclosed area such as a basement, garage, shed or tent.

• Make sure that you and your family knows what propane smells like in case of a leak.

• Consider installing a propane gas detector for additional safety.

• Create an emergency preparedness plan and review it often with your family.

As always, if you have a residential propane emergency or need a repair, contact us immediately. Stay warm and stay safe this winter with ThompsonGas!

Propane Benefits from Fiscal Cliff Deal

On January 1, 2013 Congress completed action on legislation to avoid the consequences of sending the country over the so-called fiscal cliff. The legislation, which is expected to be signed by the president, contains several provisions that will affect the propane services industry. First, there were some propane specific energy tax credits that had expired and have been extended through 2013. In addition, these provisions were also made retroactive for taxable year 2012:

• Alternative Fuel Tax Credit: 50 cents per gallon including propane used in forklifts

• Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Tax Credit: 30% up to a maximum of $30,000

• Energy Efficient Existing Homes Tax Credit: $150 for qualified propane furnace and $300 for qualified propane water heater

• Energy Efficient New Homes Tax Credit: Up to $2,000 to an eligible contractor who constructs a qualified energy-efficient new home

All the same rules apply to these credits as in the past. The only thing that has changed are the expiration dates.

The other provision of interest to the propane services industry concerns the estate tax. The change to the estate tax provisions have now been made permanent. These changes include an exemption level of $5 million with a top tax rate of 40%. While a complete repeal of estate taxes was preferable, it was never a realistic expectation. The fact that these new thresholds have been made permanent is a step in the right direction.

2013 New Year’s Resolution: Switch to Propane!

Each year we make the same ol’ New Year’s resolutions, but how many of us actually keep our promises? This year, why not resolve to do something that will benefit your family, the environment and your wallet: switch from oil/electric to propane. Based on five of the most common New Year’s resolutions, we’ve put together a list of reasons why 2013 could be the year of savings by converting from oil to propane.
1. Lose Weight (Cut Energy Use)
An approved, clean fuel, propane is one of the cleanest burning of all fossil fuels. Per pound of fuel burned, coal emits more than twice the amount of carbon dioxide as propane. Appliances powered by propane are 10-15% more efficient than oil and electric. Propane-fueled vehicles produce 30-90% less carbon monoxide and about 50% fewer toxins and other emissions than gasoline engines. Propane is nontoxic, so it’s not harmful to soil or water either.
2. Get Out of Debt (Save Money by Powering Your Home with Propane)
With propane gas services by ThompsonGas, you could save your household $500-$1,000 each year withresidential propane. Propane savings are nearly $1.4 per gallon compared to current oil and electric prices. While a 53 gallon electric tank water heater could run you $585 a year to operate, a standard tankless propane water heater costs only $375 a year. In short, you could save 35% in costs annually!
3. Spend More Time with Family & Friends
Gather the family around a warm fireplace for game night, or invite all your friends over for Sunday night football and burgers on your propane-powered grill. From propane home heating, to cooking and grilling, ThompsonGas will help you get the most from your propane home. Whether you’re grilling outside, heating your swimming pool or spa, or fueling your indoor fireplace, propane is the choice fuel for energy-efficient, convenient and reliable family fun.
4. Learn Something New
Did you know with more than 6,000 retail dealer locations, propane is readily available all throughout the U.S.? Used for everything from cooking, heating and cooling, to farm equipment, emergency generators and lighting, propane is more versatile than you think. Thanks to portable tanks, propane can be used in areas beyond gas mains. Fleet vehicles, cargo vans and even police cruisers can run more efficiently with propane, and nearly 97% of propane consumed in the U.S. is produced in North America.
5. Be Less Stressed
Don’t rely on just anyone for your propane service. Count on ThompsonGas, the most trusted name in the industry. Converting from oil to propane with us is worry-free because we handle the installation, repair, propane delivery, servicing and more — everything from start to finish. Our professionals will visit your home to discuss the advantages of propane, review your current system and provide a complimentary home heating audit. That’s the ThompsonGas difference!
